Winter 2021
Team: Nancy Hur, Ho Kwon Kim, Aaron Park
Vida is a mountain biking helmet designed as a part of my team's helmet brand, Vitesse. Using simple vents and sleek surfaces, Vida mimics the aerodynamics and elegance of the most high-end time trail helmets. Each member of the Vitesse team designed an individual helmet, sharing assets and synchronizing CMF and form language to create a cohesive brand.
Final helmet lineup, featuring: Strasa, a commuter helmet by Nancy on the bottom; Tempete, a chrono helmet by Ho Kwon on the right; Aire, a road cycling helmet by Aaron at the top; and Vida, my mountain biking helmet on the left.
INTERVIEW FINDINGS
JULIE, 34
“The vents at the top of my helmet let in too much sun, which heats my head up too much.”
“I always get really sweaty around my temples, and because I have so much hair, sweat will drip down the back of my neck.”
“Sometimes sweat gets in my eyes and irritates them so it’s hard to see.”

Initial ideation sketches

A market survey of helmet designs reveals that there is a lack of moderately-priced helmets with minimal, aerodynamic forms.

Sketch refinement based on market survey findings.

CMF

The back provides additional protection, with a shark fin vent to air out the back of the neck, and a dial fit adjustment under the skull to prevent pinching.
With minimal but efficient vents that guide air along the entire length of the helmet, Vida keeps the minimal form that many mountain helmets lack.
As a personal addition to this team project, I experimented with my own CMF and made an animation using Keyshot and edited in AfterEffects and Premiere Pro.
